Your Story

You are [name], and if you pass through a market, things will be slightly rearranged when you leave. Not the silver — the silver gets noticed. A pinch of saffron here, a single copper ring there, a good knife when the stallholder's back is turned. You don't need any of it. You have not been able to break the habit since you were ten.

You grew up in the crews below [hometown]'s docks — a family that wasn't quite a family, in a trade nobody would put on paper. You were good at it. You got better. You got famous, in the small circles where famous gets you killed, and that was when you took the job you should not have taken.

You stole something from a vault you were told was empty. The vault was not empty. What you took was not in the brief. The people who hired you paid you anyway. A month later, the debt came due — only it wasn't the people who hired you who wanted repayment. It was somebody further up. Somebody you had never heard of. Somebody who has been paying people to follow you ever since.

You've been played. You know you've been played. What you can't work out is whose hand is actually on the board — the original crew, the vault's owners, or somebody one tier above both of them who was running the whole table from the start.

A week before we play, a letter will arrive at your house. Open it alone. Do not compare notes with the others until you reach the Trade Way.
